Cataracts - i.e. the clouding of the lens of the eye - are a common vision problem, particularly amongst an aging population. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. This vision problem typically develops slowly - in fact, the first physical signs of cataracts are not noticeable to patients until years after cataracts have started to form. Because vision problems typically do not develop for years, annual eye exams are a critical part of finding and addressing cataracts early on. In addition to visiting the eye doctor on an annual basis, it’s important to make an appointment for an eye exam if you notice any changes in your vision, such as double vision or flashes of light, sudden eye pain, or sudden headache, see your doctor right away.
At Luna Vision and Med Spa, we understand the importance of professional eye care services. Our eye exams and diagnostic testing are provided by Dr. Dutt, a board-certified ophthalmologist with over 22 years of private practice experience.
Most medical insurances will cover this procedure. Dr. Dutt’s no stitch cataract surgeries are 10-15 minutes long and performed under monitored anesthesia. Dr. Dutt can also get rid of your glasses by placing specialty lenses at the time of surgery. If you also suffer from glaucoma, Dr. Dutt can add a quick glaucoma procedure at the same time.
Cataracts are cloudy areas in the lens of the eye that can interfere with our ability to see clearly and properly. Normally, the lens of the eye helps to focus light rays on the retina - the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Once there, light is changed into nerve signals that are sent to the brain and processed as visual images.
However, the lens must be clear for the retina to receive a sharp image. When a lens is clouded, however, light rays cannot be properly processed and focused, leading to vision problems.
Symptoms of cataracts include:
Aging is the leading cause of cataracts, as normal changes within the eye increase the risk of our natural lens clouding over. A family history of cataracts, smoking, certain medical problems, past eye injuries, and exposure to damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays can also raise the risk of cataract-causing eye damage.
Cataracts are detected through comprehensive eye exams. These exams may include vision chart tests, dilated eye exams, and pressure measurements of the eye.
The symptoms of early cataract may be improved with new eyeglasses, brighter lighting, anti-glare sunglasses, or magnifying lenses. If these actions do not help, and/or as symptoms worsen over time, surgery will be the next step.
Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. It's one of the most common operations in the U.S. Cataract surgery recovery time will vary person to person, ranging from a few days to a few weeks.
At Luna Vision and Med Spa, cataracts are removed routinely through a state-of-the-art no-stitch procedure. We will always discuss your care and surgical options in-depth, allowing you to make an informed medical decision regarding your care. To begin your care journey, please contact us.
